Top 10 VPN Services

VPN’s (virtual private networks) are primarily used for security and privacy. Many of us are familiar with the VPN provided by our work. A VPN from work allows the user to obtain a local network IP address and create a secure connection. Once the local IP is obtained, users can access information from their Intranet, like a dev server.

A personal VPN servers a similar purpose. Most people want to access content they couldn’t otherwise. This typically takes the form of obtaining an IP address from another country. Services like Netflix, Hulu, and Pandora are locked to users in the United States. If you use a VPN to obtain an American IP address, you can then access these services. The same theory is applicable to a myriad of worthwhile services from around the globe.

Some people use a VPN to mask their activities (P2P, torrents, etc). A few providers even claim they don’t keep logs. I typically don’t recommend using a VPN for this application. You are unlikely to end up being sued by a big bad media company, but the VPN provider might drop you from their service and keep your money if they receive a DMCA complaint. Even if the VPN provider is located in a fairly rogue company, they are still at risk of being compelled to cooperate since they likely have equipment located in law abiding countries. They wouldn’t be inclined to forfeit this equipment to protect you if push came to shove. Use a seedbox if you are a heavy P2P user.

Now let’s get to the heart of the article –

Top 10 VPN Services in 2014

1. HideMyAss has been the best VPN service for years. The company built its reputation by providing a free proxy service. They now boast 111,214 IP addresses and 829 servers in 172 countries.

2. Private Internet Access was a small player in the field, but they’ve stepped up their game over the last year. OpenVPN, PPTP, and L2TP over IPsec protocols are all supported. Private Internet Access has servers in 9 countries. Importantly, they also claim to not keep any traffic logs. The prices are also dirt cheap.

They accept every form of payment under the sun. Andrew Lee, one of the co-founders of the service is a major proponent of bitcoin style services.

3. IPVanish is another personal VPN service that has grown by leaps and bounds over the last couple of years. This isn’t surprising given their association with Highwinds, a major player in a multitude of Internet services. IPVanish pulls from a pull of more than 7000 IP addresses using 100 + servers in 43 countries.

4.  Strong VPN is one of the oldest and most trusted VPN providers. The service from Strong is rock solid, but holy cow their website and messaging is confusing. They obviously have yet to learn the old adage less is more. I’d still buy VPN service from them without hesitation. They have more than 407 in 20 countries.

8. Invisible Browsing VPN has been around since 2003. They have more than 57 and even tout a special torrent plan. They also provide a six hour free trial. This is quite uncommon in the VPN industry as most providers prefer to offer money back guarantees. They offer a variety of payment options including bitcoin.

9. 12VPN has servers in 9 countries. They buck the trend of monthly pricing by only offering yearly plans. Fear not, the service does offer a 7 day money back guarantee.

Awesome website. If you don’t want anyone to know what you are downloading including your Internet Service Provider then you should be using a VPN Service.

I love VPNs. I was surprised to learn your ISP wont even know what you are doing online.
