Reviews

This router has a 4 star rating on Newegg with 198 reviews. It maintains the same 4 star rating on Amazon with 1,037 reviews. The price on Amazon is currently $190. Reading through the negative reviews show a consistent theme of some users having signals consistently dropped and complaints about the firmware. Since you are likely a VPN fan in the first place, you could likely fix these problems should they occur by switching DD-WRT firmware. I’m fairly amazed by how many of the negative reviews Netgear has taken the time to reply. This is certainly an indication of how dominant Amazon is, but wouldn’t you hate to have that job.

Features

As to be expected from a router in this almost $200 price range, this unit has all the bells and whistles you could want.

In short, this Gigabit router has it all.

Price Comparison

We already mentioned that the price is $189 on Amazon. The Newegg price is $28 cheaper and even more if Amazon happens to charge tax in your area. When I searched in Google Shopping, one store (eProducts Club) cost the same amount as Newegg. I personally would be afraid to buy from them since they have no ratings whatsoever.

Most of the other known merchants (Buy.com Rakuten, B&H Photo, etc) are in the $190 price range of Newegg pre-coupon.

At the end of the day, this is a hell of a router at an affordable price. It is VPN friendly with the native firmware and even better if you are willing, to upgrade to DD-WRT. Routers like the Netgear R700 are so powerful, they are decent computers in their own right. This version even has parental controls if you want to keep your kids from accessing certain content. Routers by nature tend to be more flaky than most products. A lot of this has to do with user error, and the rest has to do with the million and one variables of a network. If you have the money and the need, it would be hard to go wrong with this product.
