CyberGhost Review

Free VPN

CyberGhost is your best choice if money is tight, and you need a free VPN service. Like most free VPN services, they have free and paid plans. They are the most well known and professional provider that offers a free plan. Free plans are limited to 1GB of traffic per month.

VPN Client

One of the nicest features of their service is the VPN client. The current version is about twelve megabytes. It can be installed in English, Spanish, French, Italian, Polish, and Romanian. Romanian threw me for a loop at first, but then I realized CyberGhost is located in Bucharest. The installation took a little longer than I expected. I thought for a moment that it might have stalled for good. The fact that my computer is a piece of shit is the most likely culprit. After the initial installation, the program will ask you to either register or enter your credentials.

CyberGhost Program Registration

As an unexpected perk, the installer offered me 1 month of free service. I love a freebie, so I clicked the button for 1 month of free service. No credit card information was required for the free 1 month account. This is an important detail for those of us who have been burned by supposedly free magazine subscriptions and other free trials in the past. God knows, free with most companies means it is time to whip out the reading glasses.

The CyberGhost interface is intuitive.

The amount of servers available is impressive. I am not sure how their programmers decided to order the list because it isn’t alphabetical, and it isn’t organized by country. Server locations have two columns next to them. One indicates the speed of the server. The other indicates how good the server is for anonymity. I am clueless as to how they determine the anonymizing properties of a server.

CyberGhost Speed

My speeds weren’t amazing with CyberGhost. They were sufficient to browse the web though. At the end of the day, it is important to remember this is a free VPN service.

The server in Hamburg, Germany had a ping of 171 ms, download speed of 1.75 Mbps and upload speed of 2.4 Mbps. My base download speed is 10 Mbps.

CyberGhost German Server

A server in the United Kingdom rendered similar results with a download speed of 1.59 Mbps and an upload speed of 1.87 Mbps.

CyberGhost is a great free VPN service. The client they provide is easy to use, and the service is good enough for basic browsing. Anyone willing to provide a free 1 GB of service per month is worth trying in my book.
